The results of a research project aiming to an enlargement of the process boundaries in laser- GMA-hybrid welding will be presented. With the oscillating arc during the hybrid welding process the tolerances for process stability and side wall fusion under the occurrence of bigger and variable gaps can be increased according to the specific demands of a customer. The adaptation of amplitude and frequency of the oscillating arc enables a smooth forming of the upper bead shape according to the actual gap width. The optional use of a flux backing support avoids the sacking of the weld pool and assists a smooth root formation.
