Laser transmission welding of plastics offers many advantages compared to conventional welding techniques and it has become a well-known technique in the past few years. There are several different laser welding techniques to join plastics and one of the less known techniques is called quasi-simultaneous laser welding. In quasi-simultaneous laser welding the laser beam is scanned several times across the welding path with a galvo mirror system heating the material up gradually until the entire weld is melted almost at the same time. Quasi-simultaneous welding is a flexible and a fast technique to join plastics and therefore it has gained interest in mass-production, especially in electronics industry where the short welding times are necessary. In quasi-simultaneous welding short welding time can be achieved with different parameter combinations. In this study the effect of different parameter combinations to the weld properties in quasi-simultaneous laser welding was defined. The quasi-simultaneous welding was also compared to the more known contour laser welding technique. The polymers tested were polypropylene (PP) and polycarbonate (PC), which is widely used in consumer electronic devises. |
